The new Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300’s design is highly influenced by the style of the previous model, which again is influenced by the previous Aquaracer models, the most recent TAG Heuer 2000, and the Heuer Reference 844.
Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, TAG Heuer produced a variety of Heuer 844 models. There are strong parallels between the Heuer 844 and its modern-day successor when put next to the new Aquaracer Professional 300. Furthermore, the Heuer 844, inspired TAG Heuer to develop a limited-edition model called the ‘Aquaracer Professional 300 Tribute to Ref. 844.’
This model is quite different from regular variants of the new Aquaracer. The hour and minute hands are lined with the classic radium Super-LumiNova®. The black opaline dial is smooth, without the ribbing present on the normal 43mm Aquaracer, whereas a red 24-hour scale is located next to the indices, just like in the original watch.
The scale was designed to be a short conversation chart for professionals reporting occurrences on a 24-hour schedule.
The case of ‘Aquaracer Professional 300 Tribute to Ref. 844’ is made of high-quality Grade 5 titanium; a material mostly used in the aerospace industry as well as for medical purposes.
It is incredibly strong, light, resistant to corrosion, and hypoallergenic, but it takes longer and is more difficult to grind than steel or gold.
Another advantage of Grade 5 titanium is that it is easily polished and can have the same exquisite, dazzling aspect as steel but with a noticeable lack of mass.
When evaluating this tribute model, it is evident that the brand’s design department has put in a lot of time and work on the details. The original 844’s black perforated rubber strap, for example, has reappeared, but this time the openings on the strap are octagonal-shaped, duplicating the current Aquaracer’s use of six, eight, and 12-sided forms.
A quick glimpse at the new Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 43mm, may cause some observers to believe it is very similar to the previous model.
This is done on purpose to some extent. When updating a very successful model, the goal is to develop something new and refine. Certainly, embracing a novel method or pursuing “faulty” design would be rash, however some watch makers have revisited a successful model and effectively lost its prior attractiveness by carelessly modifying previously intact features.
The 43mm model is now available in four colorways (excluding the Tribute to Ref. 844), each with its own colourway that matches the dial hue with the best bezel shade. The blue dial contrasts with a blue bezel, and the black and silver dials also contrast with a black bezel.
The three previously mentioned models are made of steel and the fourth model has a Grade 2 titanium case and a green dial epidermis with a matching green bezel.
Each of the four dial variants has the dial ribbing seen on the previous model, but the engraved lines are spaced differently, giving more area for dial text while also contributing to the watch’s ultra-refined aesthetic.
The 36mm model comes in three colors: black with a black bezel, silver with a black bezel, and blue with a blue bezel. This latter reference contains eight diamond-set indexes that replace the luminous octagonal indexes present on other models. On the 43mm variants, the ribbing has grown into a smooth wave-like motif. This latter feature has a softer feel than the previously stated straight dial ribbing.
Nevertheless, some things should be left just the way they should be.
The Calibre 5 is a well-known and dependable automatic movement. Its composition is well-known among watchmakers all around the world, making routine servicing and repair simple and affordable.
